WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY
What is Weight Loss Surgery?
Weight-loss surgery or bariatric surgery helps you to lose weights. It also lowers the risk of several medical problems associated with obesity; it is beneficial in treating diabetes, infertility issues, heart issues, and hypertension, depression, anxiety, and gall bladder complications.
Bariatric Surgery either limits the stomach’s food holding capacity that in turns restrict the calories or it shortens the small intestine parts that reduce the absorption of calories and other nutrients,
The result of this surgery is long-lasting means it helps to reduce the weight over the long run. So you can have a weight loss solution, and you can cure several other problems as well!
Types Of Weight Loss Surgery
Types of weight-loss surgery are:
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Sleeve gastrectomy
ROUX-EN-Y GASTRIC BYPASS
In Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the surgeon will create a small pouch at the stomach’s upper part. The pouch will be the only part of the stomach to receive food, limiting the amount of eating and drinking at one time.
The small intestine is then linked to the new pouch. Food directly flows from the pouch into this part of the intestine. The top part of the stomach keeps on making digestive juices. However, the newly constructed portion of the intestine is still attached to the main stomach to allow the digestive juices to get into the small intestine. As a result of all these changes, the food bypasses a portion of the small intestine leading to fewer nutrients and calories absorption.
In a sleeve gastrectomy, the stomach’s part is separated and removed from the body. The residual section of the stomach is converted into a tube-like structure allowing it to hold a lesser amount of food. This also produces less appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin, decreasing your desire to eat. Sleeve gastrostomy has nothing to do with the absorption of calories and nutrients in the intestines.
In short, Bariatric or a weight loss surgery also changes the hormonal balance inside the body that promotes the breakdown of fat, giving an early feeling of satiety. A person will feel less hungry; feel full for a more extended period. Hence, people can lose weight over the years, and they can maintain a healthy weight.
